What this is
MaisonMate Plumbing Notes is a small collection of writing about the water and heating in your home — how it works, what commonly fails, and what's worth knowing before you make a decision.
We're a couple of people who've spent a lot of time around London houses and the systems that keep them warm and dry. The notes here are the result.
What we cover
Some pieces explain the fundamentals — how a central heating system moves warmth around a home, or the difference between combi, system and heat-only boilers. Others are more hands-on:
- Clearing and preventing blocked drains
- Finding hidden water leaks before damage spreads
- Planning a bathroom installation that lasts
- What to do (and what not to do) in the first minutes of a burst pipe
We also look at specific parts of the city — heating and pipework in Ealing's older properties, drains and outdoor water supply in Bromley, and what homes across Croydon tend to need.
How we write it
Plainly, and only about things we understand. We'd rather explain one thing properly than list ten in a hurry. If something is genuinely a judgement call, we say so rather than pretending there's a single right answer.
